An ongoing police investigation is taking place in Birmingham after a man was set on fire while walking home from a mosque.
The victim was walking on Dudley Road when West Midlands Police believe he was approached by another man on Brixham Road in Edgbaston, shortly after 7 pm on Monday.
The two men briefly spoke before the attacker sprayed the victim with an unknown substance, causing his jacket to ignite and his face to suffer burns.
The man was then taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police are aware of video footage on social media that shows the incident and are examining it as part of their investigation.
Supt James Spencer said that they are examining CCTV footage, talking to witnesses, and determined to find the culprit.
He added that he has spoken with community members and understands their concerns and desire for answers. Spencer urged the community to work with the police and avoid speculation at this stage.
Extra officers will be deployed in the area to communicate with the community and provide reassurance, according to the force.
