For the first time in 17 years, hundreds of ABC staff have gone on strike. This industrial action may disrupt regular programming throughout the day, as mentioned by a host on ABC Radio Sydney.
The national broadcaster receives over $1 billion in government funding annually.
Many taxpayers have taken to social media to express their frustration with the strike. Some suggest that the staff should be let go in order to save taxpayer money.
The journalists’ union, MEAA, had announced on Tuesday night that the planned industrial action by 1,000 staff members had been called off.
This was due to ABC management agreeing to draft a new workplace agreement.
However, broadcasting workers from the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) stated they would still proceed with the walkout in protest of management’s handling of the negotiations.
Sinddy Ealy, a representative of CPSU, explained that the walkout aimed to demonstrate their members’ frustration with the level of disrespect shown by ABC management.
Ealy emphasized that the CPSU members could not be deterred from their course of action.
