David Warner, the Australian opener, may be unable to play in any of the matches in the three-game one-day series against India due to his slow recovery from a broken elbow.
He needs a positive assessment from the medical staff ahead of the final ODI in Chennai after completing a training session.
This was only his second training session since returning to India for the one-day series after suffering a hairline fracture of his left elbow during the second Test in Delhi.
His first session was stopped when a ball hit his thigh. Mitchell Marsh has been opening the batting in his absence and has performed well, scoring 81 off 65 balls in the first game and 66 not out from only 36 balls in the second game.
The three one-day matches against India are important preparation for the 50-over World Cup in India later this year.
Warner’s Test future has been questioned following an inconsistent summer, but it would be hard for the selectors to leave him out of the World Cup this October and November. One-day cricket has been his best format recently.
He has scored 506 runs at 50.6 with a century and four half-centuries in his last ten one-day innings going back to the Sri Lankan tour in June.
