Eight of the alleged fake electors involved in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia accepted immunity deals from the prosecution in an ongoing grand jury probe into whether former President Donald Trump and his allies worked to overturn the results, a new court document shows.
The electors, referenced only by letters A through J, had interviews with the prosecution April 11 through 14, with the exception of one who was out of the country.
The court filing was first reported by CNN.
Defense attorney Kimberly Debrow revealed the existence of the immunity deals in a court filing Friday, saying her eight clients had accepted the agreements last month. The filing does not identify the people who were offered immunity deals.
Last July, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ office revealed that each of the 16 people who signed the false elector certificate was a target of her investigation, which is examining whether Trump and his allies committed any crimes while trying to overturn his narrow election loss.
The 16 fake electors met at the state Capitol on Dec. 14, 2020, and signed a certificate declaring falsely that Trump had won the presidential election and declaring themselves the state’s “duly elected and qualified” electors.
The Fulton County district attorney signaled a new indictment of former President Donald Trump could come this summer in letters Monday to local law enforcement authorities warning about “significant public reaction” when grand jury results are announced.
Willis said late last month possible criminal indictments could come between July 11 and Sept. 1. The grand jury could decide to indict or not, but she asked for “heightened security and preparedness” during that period. She did not specifically name Trump.
A fresh indictment of the former president — and current White House candidate — would add further complications to both the 2024 election and the future of the Republican Party, where Trump remains a frontrunner for the presidential nomination.
