Los Angeles public school district employees faced the rain and followed through with their threat of a three-day strike on Tuesday, aiming to secure higher wages.
This action has resulted in the shutdown of the nation’s second-largest school system.
The full-scale protests were prompted by unsuccessful negotiations between the staff and the Los Angeles Unified School District schools last week, leading to this historic event.
Over 1,000 public schools are now closed, with approximately 30,000 non-teaching support workers and 35,000 teachers participating in demonstrations across the city.
These thousands of protestors, seeking increased pay to offset rising inflation and housing costs, braved the dark, rainy morning as early as 5:00 am on Tuesday.
They marched wearing rain ponchos and jackets, some attaching signs to their umbrellas and others chanting pro-union slogans. This wave of protests had been anticipated for weeks.
The strike, planned to last for three days, is an unwelcome outcome for the school district as well as about a million parents.
Approximately 565,000 district students are now without classes. District officials had expressed a strong desire to avoid such a strike, but negotiations ultimately failed.
