How did the Squak Mountain Club start?
In 1966, a group of backcountry enthusiasts in Squak Valley, California, came together to promote responsible recreation and environmental stewardship. The Squak Mountain Club (SMC) was born.
Today, the SMC is a nonprofit organization with more than 1,000 members and 20 chapters worldwide. Our mission is to inspire people to explore the natural world and enjoy its beauty through responsible recreation. We work to conserve resources, protect endangered species, and educate the public about our impact on the environment.
The SMC has played an important role in conserving sensitive wilderness areas in the Western US for over forty years. We continue to play an active role in land management today by advocating for improved trail maintenance, educating the public about Leave No Trace principles, and supporting conservation projects throughout California.
We hope you’ll join us in promoting responsible recreation and protecting our planet’s resources!
Wacky adventures of a day at work
Every day at the Squak Mountain Club, people are engaged in wacky adventures that make their jobs more fulfilling and enjoyable. This is a place where people from all walks of life come to work together for the betterment of humanity.
One such adventure happened on Monday morning when park ranger Lisa Smith got an unexpected visitor: a grizzly bear! The bear proceeded to wander through the park for hours, stopping only once to take a drink from Lisa’s water bowl. Surprisingly, the grizzly didn’t seem to be bothered by humans at all – quite the opposite, in fact.
“People often ask me how I can work here surrounded by such magnificent nature every day”, said Lisa. “The answer is simple: because it’s what makes this job worthwhile.”
This type of silliness is common at the Squak Mountain Club. It’s what keeps employees happy and engaged – and it’s also what helps them achieve their goals. For example, one employee recently saved 10 trees by counting each branch during his daily walkthrough of the forest. Another employee regularly documents invasive plants in order to help prevent them from taking over native ecosystems.
