King was a rising star at ESPN, having been with the company for almost 20 years. He held several key positions at the company, including head of ESPN.com, and most recently, executive at large for special projects, overseeing the overall direction of the company’s journalism. He reported directly to ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro.
In 2017, King was in charge of “SportsCenter” and was responsible for the 6 p.m. show led by Jemele Hill and Michael Smith. He was also a key member of ESPN’s Inclusive Content Committee, which aims to improve storytelling across all platforms by serving as a diverse resource for the company’s content creators.
It is important to note that King’s firing is unrelated to the upcoming layoffs that ESPN is currently undergoing, which are expected to occur within the next four to six weeks.
