Cigarette boat takes on huge surf and it doesn’t end well

Cigarette boat takes on huge surf and it doesn’t end well

While a surfing contest was being held at Mavericks—a world-renown surfing locale in Northern California where surfers challenge waves as tall as 60 feet—a cigarette boat owner decided foolishly to take on the huge surf, too.

It did not end well.

Pete Koff was filming surfers at Ocean Beach, San Francisco, about 20 miles up the coast from Mavericks. The waves were cresting at a “solid 15 feet.” That’s not close to 60 feet, but it’s huge nonetheless.

In the video, the cigarette boat turns into the waves and successfully negotiates a smaller wave, but the next one was, well, see for yourself (with a warning about language):

“That’s two broken legs right there,” one spectator can be heard saying in the background.

What exactly happened to the passengers on impact remains unknown, other than the explanation Koff gave on his Avenue Films YouTube channel:

“Super expensive Donzi boat was hot-dogging at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. This was the Mavericks contest weekend and the waves were solid 15′. I had some friends surfing and that’s why I was out filming this day.

“Captain Booya was drinking and gave it the full send on the outside set. Big air to flat water. Everyone in the boat was hurt except the driver. The hull cracked in half and the boat still made it back to its dock in Tiburon.”

In the comment section, Koff wrote that “you can see the [landing] splash a little,” but “you probably wouldn’t want to see the landing.”

Incidentally, the price of a Donzi boat? According to Boating magazine, two 2020 Donzi models were priced at $799,000 and $563,500.
