In 2008, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) initiated the Indian Premier League. The inaugural season saw eight teams participate. Soon, the tournament was expanded to include a total of 10 teams in 2011.
After failing to meet its annual bank guarantee, Kochi Tuskers Kerala ended up with only nine teams participating in the fifth season of IPL 2012. In October 2013, the BCCI ended Pune Warriors India on similar grounds as that of the now-defunct Kochi franchise.
Thus, the tournament was rescheduled for its eight-team IPL 2014 event. After their officials were found guilty of spot-fixing and betting, the two seasons cancel by the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.
Gujarat Lions, Rising Pune Supergiant, and CSK were the new teams for the 2016-2017 seasons. After their 2018 suspension, the two teams reinstat to IPL and then the contracts of GL/RPS were terminated.
Two more teams add by the BCCI to reintroduce the 10-team tournament structure in 2022, 11 years after its discontinuation.
