Ivan Cleary, the coach of the Penrith Panthers, is set to celebrate his 400th game as a coach on Thursday night.
Cleary is just the 10th coach in history to achieve this milestone, with Wayne Bennett still the leader with 893 games as a coach. Since returning to the Penrith Panthers in 2019, Cleary has won 79 of 104 games, with a win percentage of 76%.
Brad Arthur, the coach of the Parramatta Eels, was the first to praise Cleary, and mentioned how he appreciated Cleary’s insight about how to deal with coaching your son, which Arthur also does with Jake.
Luke Garner, a Panthers back-rower, who was handed his debut by Cleary at the Wests Tigers and now plays for the Panthers, had no idea about the milestone, and praised the coach for never boasting about his achievements.
Stephen Crichton, a centre for the Panthers, talked about how his relationship with Cleary has developed over the years, saying that it has improved both on and off the field.
Meanwhile, Melbourne part-owner and chairman Matt Tripp has scrapped the March deadline for Craig Bellamy to inform them about his 2024 plans.
Bellamy’s next move will be the best decision for him, his family and the club. Craig knows he needs to give us enough runway to find a replacement, which won’t be easy.
